John Collis has been living in Tervuren since 2019. He moved from Germany together with his wife who is a teacher at one of the European schools in Brussels. He only started painting after he retired from the world of mechanical engineering.
 
John‘s two sisters, in the UK, are both keen and talented painters. This was maybe the important spur that first encouraged him to try his hand at painting, which has now started a friendly competitive family rivalry. 
 
Painting in oil and acrylic mediums, his main interest is in portraits. Although he freely admits to be still searching to find and develop his own particular style. He is aiming for more simplifi-cation and abstraction but this route is a challenge for an engineer's eyes.
 
Most importantly, he is enjoying his artistic journey.

John Collis woont sinds 2019 in Tervuren. Hij is vanuit Duitsland verhuisd, samen met zijn vrouw, die lerares is aan een van de Europese scholen in Brussel. Hij is pas begonnen met schilderen nadat hij met pensioen ging uit de wereld van werktuig-bouwkunde.

Johns twee zussen, die in het Verenigd Koninkrijk wonen, zijn allebei enthousiaste en getalenteerde schilders. Dit was misschien wel de belangrijke stimulans die hem er toe aanzette om zich aan het schilderen te wagen, wat heeft geleid tot een vriend-schappelijke competitie binnen de familie. 

Hij schildert met olieverf en acrylverf en heeft vooral een voorliefde voor portretten, hoewel hij vrijuit toegeeft dat hij nog steeds op zoek is naar zijn eigen, persoonlijke stijl. Hij streeft naar meer vereenvoudiging en abstractie, maar dit vormt een uitdaging voor iemand met een ingenieurs-achtergrond.

Het belangrijkste is dat hij geniet van zijn artistieke reis.
